Welcome back, Berton Vermentino, and make yourself at home. You are no stranger to this initiative, and you beat hundreds of wines with alarming regularity to this spot. Despite its price, this wine is genuinely accurate, delicious, and insanely well-balanced. If you stuck it in a posh bottle, asked a fancy artist to sketch a label, and wrote the word Bolgheri on the label, this flavor could pass for £50! But it is an Aussie wine, and Aussies wouldn’t dream of charging over the odds for a wine that is not too tricky to make and whose grapes don’t cost a bomb! Of course, it helps that it comes from the Berton stable. This family is famous for crafting stunningly priced treats, and this Robin Hood mentality has served them well. With a near-tropical nose, a sleek, saline-tinged palate, and a crisp, pointy finish, the flavor puts my palate on a yacht in the Med instead of a rib in the Gulf of St Vincent. Still, it matters not because this is an excellent wine, and it possesses all of the attributes of a 100 Best wine and more besides.

Harvest timing was determined in the vineyard by flavour development, sugar and acidity levels. Harvest took place in the cool of the night to retain fresh fruit flavours and minimise oxidation before being transported to the winery. After crushing, chilling and pressing, the free-run juice was lightly clarified before a slow fermentation at temperatures of 14 to 16°C using carefully selected yeast to optimise varietal expression. After a short period on yeast lees the wine was blended, stabilised and filtered for bottling, showcasing its fresh varietal fruit flavours.

Quintessential Vermentino has a delicate pale colour with silver hues with bright aromas of green apple and lemon sherbet. Crisp and fruity, with lush flavours of lime, pineapple and honeydew melon enhanced by delicate minerality through to a deliciously mouthwatering finish.

The grapes for this wine are sourced from two areas: the Riverland and the Riverina. The vine age is varied, but all the vines are trained on a double-wire cordon trellising system with drip irrigation. In the Riverland, there are two blocks of Vermentino; the younger block is hand pruned, while the older block is machine pruned and the vines are grown in a soil type that is a grey, brown loamy sand. In the Riverina, the vines are all machine pruned and the vines are grown in sandy loam soil with a clay subsoil
