Welcome back, Berton Vermentino! You are no stranger to this acclaim, consistently outshining hundreds of other wines. This wine is exceptional, delicious, and incredibly well-balanced despite its price. If placed in an upscale bottle, with a label created by a renowned artist and the word "Bolgheri" written on it, it could effortlessly rival a £50 wine. Yet, this is a reasonably priced Australian wine, reflecting that its production is not overly complex and its grapes are not exorbitant. Moreover, the reputation of the Berton family adds to its value. Renowned for crafting impressively priced wines, the family's ethos has undeniably served them well. With its almost tropical aroma, a sleek, saline-tinged palate, and a crisp, sharp finish, this wine takes my palate to a yacht in the Mediterranean rather than a boat in the Gulf of St Vincent. Nonetheless, its exceptional quality merits its place among the 100 Best wines and more.
Harvest timing was determined in the vineyard by flavour development, sugar and acidity levels. Harvest occurred in the cool night to retain fresh fruit flavours and minimise oxidation before being transported to the winery. After crushing, chilling and pressing, the free-run juice was lightly clarified before a slow fermentation at 14 to 16°C using carefully selected yeast to optimise varietal expression. After a short period on yeast lees the wine was blended, stabilised and filtered for bottling, showcasing its fresh varietal fruit flavours.
Quintessential Vermentino has a delicate pale colour with silver hues and bright green apple and lemon sherbet aromas. It is crisp and fruity, with lush flavours of lime, pineapple, and honeydew melon enhanced by delicate minerality, which leads to a deliciously mouthwatering finish.

| Winery | The grapes for this wine are sourced from two areas: the Riverland and the Riverina. The vine age varies, but all the vines are trained on a double-wire cordon trellising system with drip irrigation. In the Riverland, there are two blocks of Vermentino; the younger block is hand pruned, while the older block is machine pruned, and the vines are grown in a soil type of grey, brown, loamy sand. The vines in the Riverina are machine-pruned and grown in sandy loam soil with clay subsoil. |
