Lack of rain, terrain, Volcanic soils and strong winds produce Greek White Wines of exceptional quality and style. Indigenous wines such as Assyrtiko, native to Santorini, create white wines that are bone dry, with hints of smoke, saltiness and minerals. A wealth of indigenous varieties and age-old vineyards have been put to use by a younger generation. Grapes such as Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, xinomavro and moschofilero have entered the modern wine drinkers' lexicon and the diverse vineyards found throughout the mainland and the volcanic islands are now producing terroir-driven wines.
Alpha Estate
Alpha Estate is located in Amyndeo, Northwestern Greece. It is the brainchild of two visionaries: second-generation vine grower Makis Mavridis and Bordeaux-trained winemaker Angelos Iatrides. Angelos is one of the most talented winemakers working in Europe. This pristine estate in the cool highlands of Western Macedonia comprises 220 hectares of privately owned single-block vineyards, certified sustainable. It employs the most up-to-date vineyard techniques and winemaking technology to produce world-class wines from French and indigenous Greek varietals.
Gaia Wines
One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution, Gaia Estate, was established in 1994 by Greek winemakers Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. Operating two different wineries, they make cutting-edge wines in Nemea and Santorini. Gaia's main aim is to present the potential of the indigenous Greek grape varieties to wine enthusiasts worldwide.
Ktima Gerovassiliou
Ktima Gerovassiliou is Evangelos Gerovassiliou's brainchild. In 1981, he initiated the revival of the family vineyard by planting the nearly extinct Malagousia. This state-of-the-art winery is now surrounded by 80 hectares of meticulously well-cared and certified sustainable vineyards on the slopes of Epanomi. Ktima Gerovassiliou guarantees consistent, high-quality wines of international acclaim yearly, and his Malagousia remains the benchmark.
