  • A wine of immense purity and drive that is bursting with intense aromas, of lemon, lime, and citrus blossom. The tightly wound palate delivers laser focussed acidity and crisp lime juice at its core and shows all the hallmarks of Florita Riesling. Ideal with Snapper and Mediterranean salsa. I am a lifelong fan of Florita. This wine never lets you down, no matter how high your standards. I have tasted the 2021 and the 2022 vintage, which will be coming to the  UK in the New Year, and both are spectacular. We have jumped forward a couple of vintages because last year’s 100 Best featured the 2019 vintage, which was already  into its stride at four years of age. This time, 2021 is tense and focused with gleamingly bright, laser-sighted Riesling purity and an acid-soaked ninja of a finish. While this is a young wine, it has already completed its CV, ready to hand it to you as you pour your first glass, informing you that this is a wine from our solar system’s highest echelon of Riesling vineyards. And, unlike so many top-end German GGs, which are almost as painful to taste in their youth as they are uncomfortable to drink, too, 2021 Florita is a joy. Every facet of a great dry Riesling is already in place, and nothing is hidden from view. Highly strung, yes, but not mute  or belligerent, this is an excellent example of a young wine that you feel not a trace of guilt for opening five minutes after the delivery driver has dropped off a case at your door. Regarding the 2022, I have to admit I think it is half a point finer than the 2021, but frankly, who cares? It matters not a jot what the score is when you are  lucky enough to drink one of the most rewarding wines on earth

The grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the night and meticulously sorted to remove any damaged or sunburnt fruit. The fruit was chilled to 6°C before being destemmed and pressed. After cold settling, the juice was racked off of its solids. Cool fermentation took place with selected yeasts at temperatures of 14 to 16°C and lasted for two to three weeks. The Florita Riesling is made following the philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the wine to reflect its distinctive and historic origins.

A textured wine of immense purity that is bursting with intense aromas of lime and hints of juniper berries. This shows all the expressive hallmarks of a Florita Riesling.

The famed Florita Vineyard is synonymous with the classic grape variety and was planted with Riesling grapes by Leo Buring in 1962. In 1986, the Barry family acquired the 32 hectare property. Florita' is Spanish for 'little flower' and the first release of this micro-batch of premium Riesling was in 2004; it was the fruit of years of patience. Individual rows are selected where the terra rossa and loam soils barely cover the deep limestone below and the vines deliver a wonderful elegance. The Clare Valley climate is continental, with a high diurnal temperature difference. The cool nights allow the Riesling vines to preserve the crisp natural acidity and delicate flavours.
