Saint-Varan is an appellation for dry white wines produced in the southern half of the Maconnais subregion of Burgundy. Due to its southerly location, the climate in the Saint Varan area is slightly warmer than other parts of Burgundy. Consequently spring frosts, which can threaten vines in cooler Burgundy appellations, are less of a danger here. The Chardonnay grapes thrive in the fossilferous limestone soils, which are from the Middle Jurassic period.
