Orin Swift Mercury Head Napa Valley 2019

  • Grape Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Country USA
  • ABV 16.1 %
  • Case size 6 / 75cl
  • Aged for 13 months in French Oak, 43% new
  • Dark violet with a ruby crown, the wine exhibits classic Cabernet aromatics with our style: black fruits—plum and cherry—dark chocolate, leather, and Rutherford Dust coalesce from the glass. The entry is elegant and begins to flood the palate with notes of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, caramel, and a touch of brown sugar and cinnamon: rich and bold. Seamless and focused, the wine closes with lingering dusty tannins and a touch of baking chocolate.

The upfront aromatics of the wine transports one to the Cabernet  Sauvignon vineyards listed above during harvest; notes of ripe and crunchy blackcurrant mean it’s almost time to pick. The nose of the 2019  Mercury Head has a concentrated dose of that aroma along with some redcurrant, fresh thyme, sandalwood, and garrigue. Profound, yet classic,  the palate expresses blackberry and raspberry preserves, a touch of rhubarb and toffee with some black tea and licorice accents. A final hint of chocolate-covered espresso bean and ultra-soft tannins frames the extensive finish.

The Orin Swift story starts in 1995 when, on a whim, David Swift Phinney understandably took a friend up on an offer to spend a term studying in Florence.During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. After graduating in 1997 he took a temporary harvest job at the iconic Robert Mondavi winery. Harvest is not an easy job and David quickly decided that if he was going to work this hard it should eventually be for himself and in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars with two tons of zinfandel, a disruptive approach to labels and marketing and not much else. Today Orin Swift is owned by California icons E&J Gallo, but David remains at the helm, disregarding the traditions of terroir and site-specific bottlings in favour of simply procuring the best grapes to make the most drinkable blends and putting them in bottles that really stand out.
