The Lugana wine region stretches between the southern shore of Lake Garda and the spectacular Morainic Hills created by the long, slow erosion of glaciers in the late Ice Age. Five picturesque and historical municipalities are included in this area; four of them are part of Lombardy (Desenzano del Garda, Sirmione, Pozzolengo, and Lonato), and one is part of Verona (Peschiera del Garda). The limestone soil, with its stratifications of clay, makes it the ideal terroir for producing Lugana, which takes its name after the region. The climate is mild and gently ventilated with moderate rainfall and good diurnal temperature differences, which create natural, balancing acidity. Ca Maiol focuses on green practices such as conservative pruning, which encourages the vine to live longer; manual debudding to control the yield and equilibrium of each vine; under-row work to avoid the use of herbicides and pheromone traps to prevent vine disease caused by moths. The grapes for the Prestige cuvee come from the mature Turbiana vines in the vineyard, which are manually harvested.

Winery | Ca Maiol was founded in 1967 on the southern shores of Lake Garda by Milanese entrepreneur Walter Contato. Lugana DOC is a distinctive region that reaps the benefits of both the land and the lake, and it is in this terroir, the Turbiana vines flourish and produce their purest expression. Preserving native varieties and the natural environment is at the heart of the Ca Maiol ethos: green land management practices are used to ensure sustainability, while the winery is gravity-fed. In 2017, Ca Maiol became a part of the Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo, owned by four brothers, the third generation of the Marzotto family, who follow traditional values, blending modern agriculture and technology with nature to work together in harmony. They have invested in the winery and vineyards, and as a result, the estate’s 110 hectares are the fertile custodians of wine, which has a marked local identity and contemporary style. In 2021, Ca Maiol was awarded Winery of the Year by Gambero Rosso. |
