Peter Michael L'Apres Midi Sauvignon Blanc Knights Valley 2022

  • Grape 97% Sauvignon Blanc, 3% Semillon
  • Country USA
  • Region Knights Valley
  • ABV 15.3 %
  • Case size 12 / 75cl
  • Orange blossom along with a vibrant oyster shell and granitic minerality heightened by fresh lime, lemon fruit, and gooseberry, with a hint of pine needle and verbena. The flavors are introduced with a touch of freshness and glycerol, carrying elegant white spring flowers—jasmine and white vine rose with a resounding array of fruit,

Blended with 3% Sémillon, fermented in a barrel and matured for eight months, bursts from the glass with touches of flint and candle smoke that give way to apricot, acacia and alluring herbal tones. The light-bodied, gently creamy palate surprises with its explosive, lime, and Panna cotta-driven flavors, expanding to more savory beeswax undertones as it glides across the palate, complemented by focused acidity. Powerful yet energetic, it promises dynamic development in bottles over the next 5-7 years or more.

From his very first visit to California in the 1970s Sir Peter Michael could tell that the region was perfect for producing world-class wines and set about finding the perfect spot in which to make his mark on the vinous world. The then-unplanted Sugarloaf ranch in Knights Valley provided such a place and has provided wines of unparalleled quality since the very first vintage in 1987. By combining the classic winemaking of the old world and the complexity afforded by Californian Mountain Vineyards, the unparalleled winemaking team has been graced by some of the finest names in winemaking history.

Given the name 'The Afternoon' it should be no surprise that this is a wine for any time of day, beautifully approachable on its own yet complex enough to stand up to the richest of dishes. After hand-picking and careful sorting the wine was fermented in a barrel and then aged on lees for eight months, giving a wine full of texture, yet with the fruity, zesty character that makes it unmistakeably Sauvignon Blanc. The strong mineral background, a stamp of the Knights Valley Estate, balances the overall richness, giving superb refinement. The finish is layered, very long and elegant.

Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, and brothers Luc and Nicolas Morlet have all worked at Peter Micheal in the past and continue to consult in the present. Nowadays, winemaking is led by Robert Fiore. The estate is going from strength to strength, producing some of the finest wines red and white wines made in California. Universally accepted as an icon estate of the Napa Valley, their wines are known to be in the finest wine lists and in the best of private collections alike.
