The grapes come from six sub-AVAs within the Willamette Valley, each with its distinctive profile, which together results in a wine which is truly emblematic of the region. The sub AVAs include the Chehalem Mountains, where the basaltic and sedimentary soils produce light wines with red fruited flavours and delicate balance. Ribbon Ridge produces wines with black fruit, spice and fresh earth flavours from sedimentary soil. Yamhill-Carlton which also has sedimentary soil and results in wines with red and black fruits, tobacco and earthy notes. The Dundee Hills sub-AVA has basaltic soils and produce wines with intriguing notes of red fruit, cola, spice and tea leaves. The vines in McMinnville produce dark fruited wines with white pepper notes. Finally Eola-Amity Hills has basaltic and sedimentary soils which produce wines with dark blue fruits, currant, violets and white pepper. The vineyards are trained to vertically shoot positioned (VSP) systems, which helps to achieve between canopy size and sunlight exposure resulting in favourable and sustainable growth. The fruit is mainly sourced from sustainable certified vineyards and the grapes are hand harvested.

Winery

In 1998, Lynn and Ron Penner-Ash founded Penner-Ash Wine Cellars in Northern Willamette Valley's Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Having spent years sourcing fruit from the area, they brought to life their shared vision of building a reputation for lush, layered Pinot Noir. Lynn and Ron built a gravity-flow winery in the heart of their six-hectare estate, and the vineyards and winery are Low Input Viticulture & Enology (LIVE) certified. In 2016, the winery joined the Jackson Family Wines portfolio, embarking on a new partnership based on shared love for the land and uncompromising wine quality. Penner-Ash continues to source from premier vineyards across the Willamette sub-AVAs, grounded in decade-long relationships with grower neighbours and friends. Specialists in Pinot Noir, they beautifully illustrate the nuances of the terroir.
