Melville Estate Block M Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills 2020
- Country USA
- Producer Melville Estate
- Grape Pinot Noir
- Case size 12 / 75cl
- An exposed, windswept mesa on the west side of the Melville Estate. Sitting atop a sun-exposed plateau with several feet of botella clay soil, the extremity of Block M is enhanced by the gravitational pull on three exposed sides forcing the roots to search deeper for sustenance. Block M comprises equal amounts of Pinot Noir clones 114 and 115. The lesser-known 114 is lush, velvety, and textural with an elegantly pliant internal core, while clone 115 delivers fruit at a higher pitch coupled with a more structurally pronounced personality. The marriage of these complementary components is what renders Block M so complete.
"Vinified with about 60% whole clusters, the medium ruby colored 2020 Pinot Noir Terraces has a deep core of red cherries, pomegranate and cranberries layered with tones of blood orange, aniseed and garrigue. Medium-bodied, gently chalky, and super fresh, it offers detailed wild berry fruits and a long, ethereal, floral finish. 670 cases were made." Erin Brooks in the Wine Advocate, 95 Points, 2022-2030

Winery | Chad Melville works in the western hills of the Santa Ynez Valley, a paradoxical landscape of exceptional cool temperatures - despite being less than 150 miles from Los Angeles! This is down to its unusual east-west orientation, which funnels the cool Pacific winds down the valley's length. These conditions create incredibly sunny vineyards with every hint of moisture pulled from the surface of the grapes by the wind. The intense concentration, brilliant flavour, and harsh, stressful environment create some of the finest Pinot, Chardonnay and Syrah. |
