J Lohr Los Osos Merlot Paso Robles 2018

  • Country USA
  • Region San Luis Obispo County, CA
  • Case size 12 / 75cl
  • Bright fruit flavours with supple tannins upon release, but will evolve pleasingly over the next 5 to 7 years
  • 12 months in barrel with 15% new oak
  • The wine exhibits a medium-dark colour with a mature red hue. Varietal aromas of black plum and violet meld with a barrel signature of hazelnut and baking spices. The generous fraction of Malbec in the blend accentuates bright fruit and floral tones. Firm tannins and lively acidity bring a lengthy finish.
  • A wine with just the right touch of sweet oak and gentle tannins for pairing with anything off the grill. We grow our Merlot grapes in the moderately cool El Pomar District of Paso Robles, which is acknowledged to be the ideal area for this variety in the Paso Robles AVA. Planted on Nacimiento-Los Osos, Arbuckle-San Ysidro, and Arbuckle-Positas complex soils, these well-drained but relatively poor mediums limit vine vigour and support wine quality. Traditionally, we harvest our estate-grown Merlot grapes across a range of sugar ripeness. The early picks usually capture the classic varietal definition of Merlot, while the fruit harvested later adds depth and intensity to the wine. Clone and rootstock combinations, along with the variations in soil, add complexity to our Los Osos release, as does the introduction of Italian clones of Merlot.

J Lohr was founded in 1973 by the eponymous Jerry, who initially looked at the cool and windblown Monterrey coast. Fairly quickly building a successful business with the lovely terroir there, he expanded to Paso in search of a place to grow truly great Cabernet. And, with no doubt - he found it. Founding the Hilltop Vineyard pretty quickly, they expanded rapidly off the back of the quality of Paso Robles fruit and the exceptional quality of the wines they produced. Nowadays, this is one of the USA's favourite wines - not requiring pretence or shouting to show how damn good it is. This is a Cellar's favourite, with the Seven Oaks and the Riverstone proving firm favourites amongst our customers.
