  • An elegant wine expression, with black cherry and red flowers complemented by subtle savory notes and beautifully integrated oak spice. Refined, soft tannins on the palate are balanced by fine acidity, through to black cherry and earthy flavors on the finish. Shows that while we all know that Larry Cherubino is a dab hand with Chardonnay and Cabernet, as well as countless other varieties, he can also work his magic with the most fickle red grape of all, Pinot Noir. 2022 Foudre is blessed with gentle rose and raspberry fruit, and this unhurried wine shows delicious balance thanks to Italianate acidity, eight months in French oak foudres, and pinpoint accurate balance. This is not a rich, dark style but a light-hearted, refreshing, resonant style, and it sits shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the more recognized Pinots from Victoria and Tassie in this Report. The Riesling is the most decorated Laissez Faire wine in the history of 100 Best.

While inspiration has been taken from organics, biodynamics, and natural winemaking practices, the Laissez Faire range could be called natural wines; Larry Cherubino likes to think of them as "post-natural" wines. Believing in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, Larry grows all his grapes and can account for their provenance and natural status. While copper is allowed in organic viticulture, minimal copper treatments are used here. The vines are grown in Channybearup in Pemberton, which is cooled by its proximity to the Southern Ocean. However, easterly winds that reach Pemberton have moved across more landmass, bringing much-needed heat for ripening. Planted on their rootstocks in 2004, the clone 667 Pinot Noir vines are planted at a density of 2,200 per hectare, in sandy loam soils. The fruit is hand-picked at optimal maturity.

Aromas of beetroot and earth with black cherry, red flowers and oak delivered spices. The tannins are fine and soft with a fine acidity.

Winery

Former ‘Winery of the Year’ by James Halliday and Matt Skinner, Larry Cherubino wants his wines to be distinctive and to speak clearly of their variety and vineyard site. He believes in paying meticulous attention to the vineyard, canopy, and water management, picking at the right time, and minimal intervention in the winery. Larry also makes wine under the Laissez Faire label, an exquisite range of natural wines which are the ultimate expression of site, made in small batches from hand-harvested grapes. From delicate whites to opulent reds, all his wines have pure class and finesse.

Fruit was hand picked and sorted.

Fermentation was carried out in small lot fermenters. Moderate extraction was aimed for to ensure that the vineyard chararcters were fully expressed. The wine was matured in one year oak for six months.
