  • Approachable, striking and modern, this red blend oozes complexity - with the Shiraz's earthiness tempering the Grenache's muskiness; and together they soften the subtle steeliness of the Mataro. Notes of rose petal, musk and plum prelude a medium-bodied palate with vibrant berry flavours and fine tannins underpinned by a cleansing acidity. Centred on Southern French red varieties, and while they are not serious, long-lived or contemplative wines, they perform a vital function, and that is to spread vinous joy at all times and in all places 365 days a year. The apostrophe is a 42% Counoise, 32% Grenache and 26% Shiraz that sees a short spell in new and used oak barrels. For a diminutive fellow, it packs a spicy punch with cracked pepper, cinnamon, liquorice root, and fertile earth notes underpinning a gossamer-smooth plum and cherry chassis. Clean, bright, easy and refreshing, this futuristic red works as well chilled with spicy food as it does at normal temperature with wintry fare. The skill, as is always the case, is in the blend. I cannot see any welds holding this wine together, and that is because there are none. The three grapes enjoy each other’s company and harmonise as if it were second nature

The vineyard is located in the Frankland River area of the Great Southern, which is considered to be one of the most distinctive viticulture areas in Australia. The flavour of wines grown here comes from a granite based soil. These gravelly soils also line the river valleys, rolling hills and lowlands. The vineyards are situated with a northern orientation, optimising the long sunlight hours, which promotes ripening and maturation of the grapes. The vines were planted in 1997, with 1,650 vines per hectare.

Aromas of rose petals, musk and plum. The medium-bodied palate presents vibrant berry flavours and fine tannins with a cleansing acidity.

Winery

Former ‘Winery of the Year’ by James Halliday and Matt Skinner, Larry Cherubino wants his wines to be distinctive and to speak clearly of their variety and vineyard site. He believes in paying meticulous attention to the vineyard, canopy and water management, picking at the right time and minimal intervention in the winery. Larry also makes wine under the Laissez Faire label, an exquisite range of natural wines which are the ultimate expression of site, made in small batches from hand harvested grapes. From delicate whites to opulent reds, all his wines have pure class and finesse.

The fruit was hand-picked and sorted. Fermentation was carried out in small lot fermenters. Moderate extraction was aimed for, thus ensuring vineyard characters were fully expressed. The wine was then aged in new and one-year-old oak for 6-8 months.
