  • The nose opens to display bright varietal characters of blackcurrant, combined with subtle lifted aromatics of strawberries and the floral scent of rose. Deeper layers then emerge, bringing black tea, aniseed, maple and cocoa. At the heart of the nose lies the beauty of fresh clay, capturing the essence of the earth itself. The palette has the zing of raspberry and some black pepper and gentle oak spiciness.

Woodlands now has an annual production of 12000 cases, specialising in red wine, and remains owned and operated by the Watson family. In 2010, David and Heather were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Margaret River Wine Industry Association. In 2016, David & Heather were the joint recipients of the prestigious Jack Mann Memorial Medal. The medal is awarded annually to those significantly contributing to the WA Wine Industry. Woodland's premier wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon, is still made from the same planting originally made by David and Heather in 1973. Woodlands Cabernet Sauvignon continues to garner awards and critical acclaim, including being listed in the Langton Classification of Fine Wines.

When David and Heather Watson first established Woodlands in 1973, they were amongst the first six pioneers to plant vineyards in Margaret River and can certainly claim to have helped establish the region’s reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon. With the addition of a second vineyard site, purchased in 1998, the Watson family now have 25 hectares of vineyard in the Wilyabrup valley, which is maintained by hand using traditional and organic methods and without irrigation – a rarity in this arid corner of Australia. It is a true family affair; son Stuart is the winemaker, and Andrew is in charge of operations. Five red stars from Halliday and an ‘Outstanding’ rating for the Cabernet Sauvignon from Langton’s identify Woodlands as one of the very best producers in the region.
