Donelan Cuvee Keltie Syrah Somona County 2013

  • Grape Syrah (100%)
  • Country USA
  • ABV 14.8
  • Case size 12 / 75cl
  • The nose shows hints of grilled meats, confectionary notes, tobacco, and graphite. On the palate, richness, and structure are in beautiful harmony, creating irresistible litheness. the remarkable nose of violets and hot fudge. The wine opens on the nose with black cherry, mole sauce, and dried rose petals. A velvety texture on the palate is framed with a balance of acid and tannin. Fermented with nearly 100% whole cluster and aged for 20 months in neutral barrels and 9 months in bottles before release,
  • "The 2013 Syrah Cuvée Keltie is a wine built around three single-vineyard choices – Walker Vine Hill, Obsidian and Richards. One hundred percent of the stems are used during fermentation. No new oak is employed, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered after 20 months. Terrific aromatics of black olive tapenade, sweet blackberry and cassis, licorice, truffle, and spice all jump from the glass of this full-bodied, tightly structured, spicy, and very layered wine that builds incrementally and finishes with extravagant richness and rather big structure. Forget it for 2-3 years and drink it over the following 15-20." 97 Points Robert M Parker jr, The Wine Advocate, 2028-2038

Winery

Founded by Joe Donelan, who now runs the business alongside his sons Cushing and Tripp, Donelan is a small, boutique Sonoma winery producing Syrah, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Roussanne and Viognier. Producing just 8,000 cases per year they prize quality over all other factors. They are becoming known for their exceptionally small-release bottlings of vinous experimentations: clonal varietals, site-specific variations, and the like. This factor has turned them from being a first-class winery into also being internationally recognized for leading this type of small-batch production.
