Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi Kydonitsa Laconia 2024 Wine Review

Overview of Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi Kydonitsa Laconia 2024

The Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi Kydonitsa Laconia 2024 is a premium Greek white wine crafted exclusively from 100% Kydonitsa grapes. Hailing from the esteemed Laconia region in southeastern Peloponnese, this wine reflects Greece’s rich viticultural heritage and unique terroir. Renowned for its high-quality, authentic expressions, Monemvasia Winery offers a fresh, aromatic single-varietal white that wine enthusiasts seeking dry, balanced, and vibrant wines will appreciate.

Grapes and Winemaking Process

Produced from the rare Kydonitsa grape variety, named after the Greek word for quince, this 2024 vintage captures the pure essence of this aromatic fruit. With a dry profile, 13% alcohol by volume (ABV), and a crisp residual sugar level of just 1 gram per litre, this wine delivers a refreshing and lively drinking experience.

The grapes are handpicked with meticulous care in the Laconia vineyards. Expert winemaker George Tsimpides oversees a careful vinification process that preserves the natural fruit aromas while lending a creamy texture and elegant complexity to the wine. The result is a bright, crisp white that balances fruitiness and structure perfectly.

Tasting Notes and Wine Characteristics

On the nose, expect an inviting bouquet of ripe quince, complemented by vibrant tropical fruit notes such as pineapple and passionfruit, along with subtle floral undertones. The palate is creamy and full-bodied with layers of bright citrus flavors mingling with tropical fruits and a touch of gentle spice. The lively acidity ensures a refreshing mouthfeel, culminating in a long, aromatic finish with delicate sweet spice nuances.

This wine pairs beautifully with seafood dishes, grilled chicken, fresh salads, and Mediterranean cuisine, making it a versatile choice for both casual meals and sophisticated dining experiences.

Kydonitsa is a rare, old local variety and one of the components of the legendary wine Malvasia. The vineyard is located on the peninsula of Maleus at the foothills of the Parnonas Mountain range at an altitude of 80 metres above sea level. Surrounded by the Myrtoo Sea to the North West and the Laconian Gulf to the South West, the vineyard is influenced by a Mediterranean climate with high sunshine hours and coastal sea breezes. The soils are clay loam and rich in minerals. All these factors contribute to creating a unique terroir, and the climatic conditions present an ideal environment for healthy vines, which are cultivated organically.
