A Nutturna 2022 – A Rare White Wine from the Slopes of Mount Etna
Al-Cantàra A Nutturna Terre Siciliane 2022 is a distinctive and elegant Sicilian white wine crafted on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, one of Europe’s most exciting and sought-after wine regions. Made entirely from Nerello Mascalese, a traditionally red grape, this is a rare and compelling white wine that captures both the energy of Etna and the poetic soul of Sicily.
Produced at 620 metres above sea level near Randazzo, this wine benefits from warm daytime temperatures and cool mountain nights, allowing slow ripening, aromatic precision and vibrant natural acidity. The result is a refined, mineral-driven Italian white wine with remarkable freshness and texture.
Tasting Notes – Fresh, Creamy and Mineral-Driven
What Does Al-Cantàra A Nutturna Taste Like?
Mouthwatering yet gently creamy, A Nutturna opens with layered aromas of fresh raspberry, pineapple and wild flowers, followed by subtle notes of mint, fennel and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is crisp and focused, with a beautifully balanced texture developed from extended lees ageing. A lifted volcanic mineral finish provides clarity, elegance and persistence.
This is a dry, refreshing white wine with complexity, finesse and unmistakable Etna character.
The Producer – Al-Cantàra, Art, Poetry and Terroir
A Winery Rooted in Sicilian Identity
Al-Cantàra is named after the river flowing through the municipality of Randazzo, where the winery and vineyards are located. The name also means “bridge” in Arabic, symbolising the connection between land, culture, art and poetry.
Owner Pucci Giuffrida, a devotee of Sicilian poetry, names each wine after verses by local poets, reinforcing the winery’s deep cultural roots. Under the guidance of winemaker Salvo Rizzuto, Al-Cantàra produces wines that are expressive, environmentally respectful and unmistakably Sicilian.
Vineyard & Terroir – Volcanic Soils of Mount Etna
High-Altitude Vineyards with Organic Principles
The 15-hectare vineyard in Contrada Feudo S. Anastasia is planted on volcanic soils rich in pumice, fossils and mineral microelements. These permeable soils encourage deep root systems and contribute to the wine’s complexity and mineral intensity.
The 14-year-old Nerello Mascalese vines are spur-cordon trained and cultivated using organic and biodynamic principles, with minimal intervention. The estate is currently in conversion to organic certification, and natural pheromones are used to control vine moths, reducing chemical inputs.
Winemaking – Precision, Texture and Purity
How A Nutturna Is Made
A Nutturna is produced by gently pressing whole Nerello Mascalese grapes and vinifying them reductively to preserve freshness and aromatic purity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts over 12–14 days at controlled temperatures.
Following fermentation, the wine rests on its fine lees for four to six months, with regular stirring to enhance mouthfeel and complexity. After bottling, it undergoes a further three months of bottle ageing before release. The result is a refined, textural and expressive Sicilian white wine.
