Zorzal Gran Terroir Gualtallary Pinot Noir 2023 is a captivating Argentinian red wine that beautifully expresses its high-altitude origins. This 100% Pinot Noir is layered with enticing notes of graphite, subtle gunpowder, and a distinctive volcanic minerality that wraps around vibrant, crunchy red fruit. A wine that perfectly captures the cool mountain freshness of the Gualtallary region, it offers exceptional complexity, precision, and balance.

Why Buy Zorzal Gran Terroir Pinot Noir 2023?

Produced by the boutique winery Zorzal, located at the highest point of Mendoza’s Uco Valley, this Pinot Noir reflects a minimal-intervention approach to winemaking. The Michelini brothers, acclaimed trendsetters of Argentinian viticulture, craft wines that prioritise purity of fruit and a faithful expression of terroir, rather than overuse of oak or extraction. With limited production and rapidly growing international acclaim, Zorzal wines are ideal for collectors and enthusiasts seeking distinctive, terroir-driven wines.

Vineyard: Gualtallary’s Finest Terroir

The grapes for Zorzal Gran Terroir come from the Albo vineyard, perched at 1,350 metres above sea level in the heart of Gualtallary, Mendoza’s highest vine-growing zone. The rocky soils, rich in calcium carbonate and granite, coupled with extreme diurnal temperature shifts (35°C to 17°C), allow for slow ripening, yielding grapes with excellent polyphenolic maturity and natural acidity. Hand-harvested in small 16kg boxes, the fruit is of exceptional concentration and vibrancy.

Vintage Report: 2023

The 2023 growing season posed climatic challenges, including spring frosts and a hot summer. However, the altitude and cooler nights of Gualtallary safeguarded grape integrity, leading to wines of impressive concentration, freshness, and texture. Despite lower yields, the quality of fruit was outstanding, producing wines of noteworthy finesse.

Winemaking

Fermented in concrete vats under CO2 saturation, with 30% whole bunches, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts at around 24°C. Maturation takes place over 12 months in 228-litre French oak barrels — only 5% new, the remainder being 3rd to 5th-use — ensuring the oak influence remains subtle, allowing the fruit and minerality to shine.

Tasting Notes

"An elegant, complex Pinot Noir with aromas of graphite, gunpowder and crushed stones, seamlessly interwoven with fresh raspberries and red cherries. The palate is bright and layered, delivering crunchy red fruit, fine tannins, and a long, mineral-driven finish underscored by mountain freshness."

The grapes for Gran Terroir originate from a single vineyard, located in the upper
central sector of Gualtallary, called Albo. The grapes are grown in a rocky soil with a
high presence of calcium carbonate and granite. The mountain vineyards are located
at 1,350 metres above sea level in the region of Gualtallary, the highest vine-growing region
zone in the Province of Mendoza, at the foot of the Tupungato Volcano. This
site is characterised by its combination of altitude, a high content of calcium
carbonate in the soil, sunny days and low rainfall. The diurnal temperature ranges here
oscillate between 35°C and 17°C, creating long, slow ripening periods, encouraging
excellent polyphenolic maturity in the grapes, while retaining refreshing balance. The
vines are trained on trellises, which provides good homogeneity, and the grapes are
hand-harvested in boxes of 16kg.
