Tasting Notes: Zorzal Gran Terroir Gualtallary Malbec 2023

The palate bursts with intense notes of blackberry, black cherry, and plum, all layered over a refined core of chalky minerality — a hallmark of Gualtallary’s calcareous soils. Hints of violet, crushed stone, and subtle spice emerge, balanced by refreshing acidity and firm yet polished tannins. The finish is long, bold, and elegant, making this an outstanding Malbec for lovers of structured, terroir-driven wines.

Vineyard and Terroir

Grown at an altitude of 1,350 metres in the Albo vineyard, the grapes benefit from extreme diurnal temperature shifts, low rainfall, and soils rich in calcium carbonate and granite. These factors contribute to grapes with high polyphenolic concentration, exceptional ripeness, and vibrant acidity — all key to producing a Malbec of depth, balance, and ageing potential.

Winemaking

Crafted with precision and minimal intervention, the grapes were vinified in concrete vats saturated with CO₂, including 20% whole bunch fermentation for added complexity. Fermentation with native yeasts at 24°C enhances the purity of fruit, while ageing in French oak barrels (5% new) for 15 months lends subtle texture and integration without overpowering the fruit expression.

The grapes for Gran Terroir originate from a single vineyard, located in the upper
central sector of Gualtallary, called Albo. The grapes are grown in a rocky soil with a
high presence of calcium carbonate and granite. The mountain vineyards are located
at 1,350 metres above sea level in the region of Gualtallary, the highest vine-growing region
zone in the Province of Mendoza, situated at the foot of the Tupungato Volcano. This
site is characterised by its combination of altitude, a high content of calcium
carbonate in the soil, sunny days and low rainfall. The diurnal temperature ranges here
oscillate between 35°C and 17°C, creating long, slow ripening periods, encouraging
excellent polyphenolic maturity in the grapes, while retaining refreshing balance. The
vines are trained on trellises, which provides good homogeneity, and the grapes are
hand-harvested in boxes of 16kg.
