- This exquisite wine boasts a deep, rich colour and a tantalizing aroma filled with mocha notes, chocolate, and luscious dark berries. Spice enhances these delightful flavours on the palate, resulting in a velvety, smooth mouthfeel that lingers long after each sip. The winemaking process began with a cool, wet spring that caused a slight delay in the budding of the vines. Despite this, the overall quality of the grapes remained consistently good, and the flowering took place approximately five days later than usual. The fruit set was well-paced and uniform, with steady vine growth as the temperatures rose in December. As a result of the generally cooler season, the 2022 wines are characterized by their stunning colour and remarkably well-balanced flavours, achieved through gradual ripening and the perfect acidity.

The grapes came from a 100% bush vine vineyard. Harvesting took place at optimal phenolic ripeness. Extended cold soaking was applied before fermentation occurred on the skins, with regular pump-overs and aeration. Fermentation temperatures were carefully monitored and kept between 24°C and 26°C. An extended post-fermentation skin contact extracted the desired level of colour and softened the tannins, resulting in a soft and rounded mouthfeel.
It is an intensely coloured wine with a perfumed nose of mocha, chocolate, and dark berry flavours. These flavours follow through onto the palate and are complemented by spicy undertones. The wine has a soft mouthfeel that lingers on the palate.

Winery | The Swartland name originates from a description of the Indigenous " rhino bush, which appears to turn black ("Swart" in Afrikaans) during the summer months. This hot, dry climate has an average temperature range of 25°C to 35°C and an annual rainfall of 450 mm and 600 mm, but the altitude of these vineyards creates a cool oasis in this arid landscape. Minimal intervention and environmentally friendly farming practices are paramount. Sowing cover crops between the vines protects them from the winter rains and maintains their valuable mineral content, nutrients, and moisture during the hot summers. The soil types vary, but Malmesbury Shale dominates, with small patches of granite and Table Mountain sandstone. |
