One of France's ancient vineyards, Côte-Rôtie's Ampuis wines garnered acclaim during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, coveted by aristocratic tables. The designations Côte Blonde and Côte Brune allegedly stem from Lord Maugiron's estate division
between his fair-haired and brunette daughters. The vines were planted between 1974 and 1992 in vineyards of extremely steep terraces. The granite soils are covered with layers of siliceous limestone in the Côte Blonde and clay and iron oxide in the Côte
Brune.
