Mulderbosch Single Vineyard Block W Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2021 – Wine Review
The Mulderbosch Single Vineyard Block W Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2021 is a remarkable expression of South African winemaking, showcasing the region’s commitment to producing world-class wines. Made entirely from Chenin Blanc, this wine offers a refined and sophisticated profile, perfect for connoisseurs seeking an elegant, dry white wine.
Upon pouring, the wine reveals a tight, youthful structure, evolving with time to showcase its full array of aromas and flavours. Initially, it displays a fresh, slightly reserved character, gradually unfolding with delicate floral notes, and subtle, intriguing scents of wet stone, sweet melon, and a whisper of vanilla. This complexity provides a multi-layered experience, enticing with each sip.
On the palate, the wine is rich, yet textured and tense, with a well-balanced mouthfeel that reflects its cool-climate origin in Stellenbosch. The balance between vibrant acidity and fruit intensity creates a taut, mineral-driven profile, culminating in a saline finish that adds to the overall sophistication.
The year 2021 in Stellenbosch saw slightly reduced winter precipitation, leading to a warmer, drier spring and a swift and uniform budburst. The early veraison in December, followed by a mild yet dry January, ensured that the vines performed optimally, resulting in an exceptionally early harvest. This combination of weather conditions allowed for a vibrant natural acidity in the final wine, ensuring its bright, fresh character.

Winery | The grapes come from the Single Vineyard Block W, located in the Rustenhof area of Stellenbosch. Cambrian Cape granite is a duplex soil with a marked textural contrast between the coarse sandy topsoil and the clay-enriched subsoil. The clay subsoil offers good water retention properties, which help to nourish the vines during the hot summers. The vineyard is just 2.5 miles from the sea, and vines are grown at 65 to 70 metres. The sea breezes have a cooling influence on the vines, imbuing the grapes with a natural acidity that balances the ripe, concentrated flavours the grapes reach in this warm, sunny climate. |
