Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella 2019: A Majestic Italian Masterpiece
Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella 2019 is a wine of unparalleled elegance and depth, embodying the timeless grandeur of Italy’s Amarone region. Crafted by the esteemed Masi producer, this red wine stands as a testament to the art of winemaking, showcasing their mastery of the appassimento technique, a traditional method where grapes are naturally dried to concentrate their flavours and aromas. A blend of Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes, this wine is an embodiment of the Valpolicella Classica area's rich heritage.
Wine Characteristics
Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella 2019 is a semi-dry wine with a complexity that defines it as a benchmark within the Amarone category. Proud, majestic, and exuberant, it balances robust flavours with a refined smoothness, making it a quintessential choice for wine enthusiasts. The wine has a distinct profile, with ripe cherry, raisin, and dried fruit flavours that are underscored by earthy, spicy notes and hints of vanilla from oak ageing. Its velvety texture and well-integrated tannins give it a remarkable depth, leading to a rich, satisfying finish.
Winemaking Tradition
Masi's renowned expertise in the appassimento technique is what makes Costasera Amarone truly exceptional. After harvesting, the grapes—Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara—are laid out on bamboo racks to dry naturally, a process that lasts for months, allowing the fruit to intensify in flavor and sweetness. This slow, meticulous drying process enhances the wine's complexity and richness, producing an Amarone that captures the very essence of the Valpolicella region. With an ABV of 15%, it exemplifies both power and finesse.

Winery | Most producers would be content with notching up a single ground-breaking contribution to the wine culture of their region. As dedicated to research as they are to winemaking and driven by an unwavering desire to stay at the cutting edge, Masi has managed three in the last sixty years. They are perhaps best known as a leading Amarone producer, having been instrumental in developing this extraordinary style, which is made solely from semi-dried grapes. In the late 1950s, they identified certain historic vineyard plots, which are vinified as Amarone and are bottled separately to this day. Their work on other wine styles has been no less influential, however. In 1964, they launched the now-legendary Campofiorin, which revived the technique of a second fermentation with semi-dried grapes, adding depth and complexity to Valpolicella. They have also rescued the ancient Oseleta Variety from extinction, using it to bring depth of colour and a layer of spicy-inky intensity to the Riserva di Costasera, Toar Valpolicella and Brolo di Campofiorin, as well as presenting it solo in the wine called Osar. |
