Wine Description:
The 2021 vintage of Chateau Haut Brion is a masterpiece and a contender for wine of the year. This iconic Bordeaux wine unfurls with an array of captivating aromas, from rich red and black fruits to more complex layers of cigar wrapper, liquorice, black truffles, loamy soil, and the delicate scent of burning embers. On the palate, it is full-bodied, deep, and concentrated, with a remarkable elegance and multidimensionality that speaks to the quality of both the vineyard and the winemaking process. The wine displays superb depth at its core, supported by lively acids and ultra-refined tannins that contribute to a balanced and refined structure.
The 2021 Chateau Haut Brion is a perfect marriage of traditional Bordeaux craftsmanship and modern viticulture, combining the classical proportions of vintages from two decades ago with the advanced techniques of today. While its flavour profile and balance may not easily correlate with a specific older vintage, Jean-Philippe Delmas suggests it may be a superior expression of the 2014 vintage, with a more concentrated and serious character akin to the 2012 vintage. Regardless of comparisons, this wine stands as a true highlight of the 2021 Bordeaux vintage.
With a harmonious blend of 50% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc, this wine achieves a balanced 13.8% alcohol content, slightly lower than the more robust 2020 and 2019 vintages, which enhances its elegance and approachability.

Winery | A candidate for the title of wine of the vintage, the 2021 Haut-Brion unwinds in the glass with aromas of rich red and black fruit mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, liquorice, black truffles, loamy soil and burning embers. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's elegant and multidimensional, with superb depth at the core, lively acids and ultra-refined tannins. Combining the classical proportions of the vintages of two decades ago with the viticultural and winemaking of today, it's a timeless classic. Still, finding an obvious analogy with an older vintage is difficult. When pressed, Jean-Philippe Delmas suggests a superior version of the 2014 vintage, and to me, a more concentrated, serious version of the 2012 vintage also comes to mind. What is clear, however, is that this is one of the real high points of 2021. The blend is 50% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc, and it attained 13.8% alcohol—a percentage point or so lower than in 2020 or 2019. 96-98 points William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2022 |
