Castello di Buttrio Friuli Colli Orientali Refosco dal Peduncolo 2020 – A Refined Expression of Friulian Elegance

Discover a Distinctive Italian Red from Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Crafted from 100% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso grapes, Castello di Buttrio Friuli Colli Orientali Refosco dal Peduncolo 2020 is a striking, medium-bodied red wine that showcases the true character of the Colli Orientali del Friuli region. With a balanced 12.5% ABV and minimal residual sugar (0.2g/L), this wine is a clean, expressive example of one of Italy’s most fascinating indigenous varietals.

Tasting Notes: Rich Fruit, Silky Texture, and Vibrant Minerality

Expect lush aromas of black cherry, wild blackberry, and ripe plum, beautifully layered with hints of crushed herbs, black pepper, and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is succulent yet structured, offering bright acidity and polished tannins that glide seamlessly through to a long, earthy finish. Subtle spice and mineral-driven freshness make this vintage ideal for food pairing or enjoying on its own.

The estate vineyard is situated on the hillside slopes at 142 metres above sea level, which ensures excellent air circulation to keep the vines healthy. The Guyot-trained Refosco vines are the dal Pundo Rosso variety, which takes its name from its distinctive purple-red peduncle, the stem that attaches the cluster to the vine. The vines range from 10 to 20 years of age. The soils comprise layers of marl and sandstone of Eocene origin, known locally in Friulian, which contains marine fossils from the Adriatic Sea. This soil produces textured and concentrated wines, balanced by cutting acidity, thanks to the soil's high pH and cool temperature. The vines are cultivated using integrated agricultural methods with low environmental impact to protect the land, encourage biodiversity and allow the grapes to express the terroir. The ideal diurnal temperature range enables the grapes to reach optimal maturity and balance between sugar, acidity and aromatic ripeness.
