Why Buy Barros Colheita Port 2005?
A Stand-Out Aged Tawny Port from a Prestigious Producer
Founded over a century ago, Barros Port is internationally recognised as one of the leading producers of Colheita Ports. Their expertise lies in extended cask ageing, allowing evaporation (the “Angel’s Share”) to naturally concentrate flavours and texture. This meticulous approach sacrifices volume in pursuit of quality, resulting in Colheitas of unrivalled depth and elegance.
The 2005 Colheita was matured in oak cask for well beyond the legal minimum of seven years before being hand-bottled to order, ensuring optimal freshness and complexity in every bottle.
Since joining the Sogevinus Group, Barros has continued to strengthen its reputation across global markets while maintaining traditional Douro craftsmanship.
Douro Valley Vineyards and Terroir
Steep Terraces, Ancient Soils and Hand-Harvested Grapes
The grapes for Barros Colheita Port 2005 come from vertically planted vineyards (“Vinha ao Alto”) carved into the dramatic slopes of the Douro Valley. These steep terraces maximise sun exposure and drainage, producing grapes of exceptional concentration.
Soils are predominantly schist greywacke (pre-Ordovician) with some granitic formations, offering excellent nutrient balance and water retention. Vines are traditionally trained low to the ground using Guyot and cordon systems, and all grapes are manually harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve quality.
Winemaking and Fortification
Traditional Port Production with Precision Control
Barros Colheita 2005 is crafted using the traditional Port winemaking method. After destemming and crushing, the grapes undergo controlled skin maceration to extract colour, aromatics and fine tannins. Fermentation takes place in vats with constant pump-overs, maintaining temperatures between 28–30°C.
At the precise moment the desired Baumé is reached, grape brandy is added to halt fermentation, preserving natural sweetness and creating a fortified wine of perfect balance. The result is a wine of exceptional purity and longevity, sourced from a single outstanding harvest.
The 2005 Vintage in the Douro
Early Harvest, Outstanding Quality
The 2005 Douro vintage was marked by an exceptionally dry growing season, leading to an early harvest of concentrated, high-quality grapes. These conditions produced Ports with structure, richness and excellent ageing potential, making 2005 a highly regarded year for Colheita Port.
Tasting Notes
Rich, Velvety and Exceptionally Persistent
Bright brown in colour with elegant reddish hues, the nose is complex and inviting, showing integrated oak, warm spice, dried fruits and subtle fruit-jam notes. The palate is intense yet refined, with firm, rounded tannins supporting layers of toffee, orange peel, dark chocolate and roasted nuts. The finish is long, smooth and deeply satisfying.

| Winery | Having celebrated their 100th year of trading in 2013, Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port. Much of their success comes from Colheita Ports - old Tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheita Ports has established them as the standout producer of this style. Barros leaves their Colheita Ports to mature in casks until they are hand-bottled to order. The loss of wine from evaporation (known as the 'Angel's Share') is much higher in comparison to bottle ageing. It is a sacrifice they are willing to make and one that helps them achieve unsurpassed quality in their Colheita wines. In June 2006, Barros was integrated into the Sogevinus Group, which is growing the brand in international markets. |
