The Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vignaferrovia 2018 is an exceptional expression of 100% Sangiovese from one of Italy’s most esteemed wine families. Produced in the heart of Tuscany and aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, this Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a collector’s choice and a connoisseur’s delight.
Crafted from grapes harvested from the Vignaferrovia vineyard, this wine is a testament to Antinori’s centuries-long winemaking heritage and their mastery in producing world-class Sangiovese.
Tasting notes: A complex and refined Brunello di Montalcino
The 2018 Vignaferrovia Riserva opens with deeply evocative aromas of leather, tobacco, and a fresh balsamic lift, elegantly intertwined with subtle hints of mint. The palate is rich yet impeccably balanced, featuring flavours of ripe Morello cherries, bitter cocoa, and plum, seamlessly melding into layers of dried flowers, lavender, sandalwood, and Mediterranean herbs.
Fine-grained, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity give the wine a lively and fresh character, while nuanced notes of cocoa powder, cinnamon, cloves, and a sanguine minerality — a hallmark of Sangiovese — enrich the tasting experience. The finish is long, elegant, and satisfying, promising excellent ageing potential.

Winery | Brunello is the driest zone of Tuscany and has a winning combination of warm days and cool nights. This allows Sangiovese to reach optimum ripeness while retaining acidity and maximising concentration. The result is one of Italy’s grandest appellations: Antinori bought this well-sited estate in 1995. The Vignaferrovia vineyard grows on rocky, gravelly soils, a condition that naturally limits the grapevine’s growth rate and enhances the quality of the berries. Southwestern vineyard exposure allows sea breezes to mitigate hot summer temperatures and limit heat spikes. The Pian Delle Vigne estate is located 6 kilometres (3.5 miles) southwest of Montalcino. Its name comes from the eponymous area where a characteristic nineteenth-century railway station is located. Pian delle Vigne stretches out over an area of 184 hectares (454 acres), of which 65 hectares (160 acres) are planted with vineyards that grow at an altitude of approximately 130 meters (426 feet) above sea level and enjoy a southwestern exposure. The estate’s namesake wine, Pian delle Vigne, represents Marchesi Antinori’s deeply personal interpretation of a prestigious and traditional wine such as Brunello di Montalcino. The Antinori family acquired the estate in 1995, the same year the first Brunello Pian delle Vigne was harvested. |
