Tasting Notes
The Yalumba The Caley 2014 opens with a deep, intense red hue. On the nose, it reveals bright floral aromas, ripe cherry, oyster shell minerality, leafy stalks, and the vibrant redcurrant notes that are signature to Coonawarra Cabernet. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, delivering concentrated layers of fruit, with a core of blackberry, dark plum, and fine-grained tannins. The wine is structured, with a silky yet assertive tannin profile, a hallmark of careful maturation.
Maturation & Winemaking
This distinguished wine spent 21 months in French oak, with 25% in new barriques and the remainder in two-year-old and older French barriques and hogsheads. The result is a perfectly balanced wine with depth, finesse, and complexity, ideal for cellaring or immediate enjoyment.

Winery | In 1847, a 37-year-old brewer called Samuel Smith left his home in Wareham, Dorset, with his wife Mary and their four children. Boarding a simple three-masted barque they left Plymouth and began the long and arduous journey to Australia, arriving in Port Adelaide. From there, they trekked north to Angaston, where Samuel worked as a gardener. It was arguably this brave decision to start a new life in a remote and distant land, together with the hardship that they endured, that formed the strong sense of family unity that has been the bedrock of the family business ever since. In 1849, he started the wine farm that would grow over the next 5 generations to become one of Australia’s leading wineries, with an internationally recognised and respected winemaking culture. To embrace the native culture, Samuel adopted a local name for his farm, calling it “Yalumba”, meaning “all the country around’’ in the indigenous Peramangk language. |
