Wine Overview: A True Expression of Mosel Riesling

The Weingut Mönchhof Riesling Grand Lay Dry Mosel 2023 is a distinguished German white wine that beautifully encapsulates the essence of the Mosel Valley. A 100% Riesling, it offers a perfect balance of elegance, dryness, and fruit-forward charm. With a dry profile (rated 1 on the scale of 1 to 7), this wine appeals to those who enjoy refreshing and crisp wines with a racy finish.

This vintage is a remarkable example of the challenges and rewards of winemaking in 2023. The year presented a slow start due to cold weather, followed by rapid growth in May and a dry July. The August rains caused an unexpected surge in grape size, leading to a high disease risk, but the careful management and favourable dry, warm weather in late September ensured a successful harvest.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of Fresh Fruit with a Smoky Undertone

The Weingut Mönchhof Riesling Grand Lay Dry Mosel 2023 is a light yet captivating wine, offering aromas of crisp green apple and juicy pear, with a delicate smokiness adding complexity. On the palate, it delivers a refreshing zesty character, typical of the region’s cool climate, while maintaining the signature minerality that Mosel Rieslings are known for. The wine finishes with a racy, lingering note, which makes it a perfect companion to seafood or poultry dishes.

20% of the grapes come from the staircase-steep amphitheater-shaped vineyards of Urziger Würzgarten (Spice Garden). The volcanic rhyolitic soils are layered with red slate. Due to the southern exposure and the protective rocks, Urziger Würzgarten is one of the warmer microclimates, producing opulent, aromatic, spicy Riesling with a typical zesty finish. However, the wine is dominated by characteristics typical of the Erdener Treppchen, located one kilometre downstream, where the terroir, microclimate, and wines are entirely different. Due to its western orientation, the slightly lesser gradient, and the lack of slate cliffs, Erdener Treppchen is cooler, which, combined with the blue slate soil, produces more delicate wines with racy acidity. The wine is named after the large rock separating these two Grand Cru vineyards: the Grand Lay. The 40 50- to 50-year-old vines are grown on original European rootstocks and are VSP-trained, which allows easy canopy management. Summer leaf removal provides good air circulation and reduces photosynthesis, resulting in a later harvest, producing berries with less sugar, less alcohol, and good aromatic maturity. Hand harvested.
