Wine Description:
The Senses Wines Heintz Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2021 is a strikingly elegant and expressive wine that exemplifies the best qualities of California's iconic Sonoma Coast region. Crafted with meticulous care by renowned winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, this Chardonnay showcases an exceptional balance of ripe fruit, spice, and subtle oak influence, making it a standout choice for wine connoisseurs and casual enthusiasts alike.
On the palate, the wine unfolds with a beautiful array of ripe stone fruits—peach, apricot, and nectarine—complemented by layers of warm spice, cedar, and a touch of candied ginger. The silky texture provides a luxurious mouthfeel, while a racy, refreshing acidity offers balance and a clean finish. The finish is extraordinarily long, lingering with hints of minerality and a faint whisper of toasted oak.
The growing season leading up to the 2021 harvest was influenced by a dry winter, with below-average rainfall and a cool spring that delayed vine dormancy until late March. The cooler, dry spring slowed shoot growth, resulting in smaller berries with concentrated flavours, rich colour, and enhanced texture. These conditions, combined with a temperate harvest season, allowed the fruit to ripen evenly, bringing out the full potential of the grapes. This meticulous process yields a wine with remarkable complexity and finesse.

Winery | The grapes come from the Heintz family, who have owned their ranch in the Sonoma Coast AVA for over 100 years. In 1982, Charles Heintz planted Clone 4 Chardonnay, he produces fruit for some of the top names in California. The 10-hectare vineyard comprises the renowned Goldridge soil, a light and fluffy sandy loam with excellent drainage properties. The vines are planted in 7x12’ spacing on a split canopy, sustainably cultivated and manually harvested. The healthy, mature vines thrive in the warm microclimate, tempered by the cool coastal breezes and the trademark fog that lingers over the vineyards, bringing moisture and cooling the vines. The result is a long hang-time, during which the vines slowly build aromatic complexity and concentrated flavours superbly balanced by natural, crisp freshness. The world-class fruit produced here is summed up by Robert Parker, whose assessment of the vineyard is “…one of the great grand cru Chardonnay sites in California.” |
