The Scribe Winery Estate Mission 2021 is a rare and compelling expression of California's historic Mission grape, showcasing the winery’s dedication to terroir and craftsmanship. Made from 100% Mission grapes grown in Sonoma Valley, this elegant red wine offers a light to medium body, delicate aromatics, and a textured, mineral-driven palate that reflects both heritage and innovation.
With only limited quantities produced, this vintage is a must-have for collectors and adventurous wine lovers looking to explore one of the earliest cultivated grape varieties in North America.
Tasting Notes: Rosehip, Black Fruit & Earthy Spice
Expect an aromatic bouquet of rosehip, rhubarb, and fresh mint, underpinned by vibrant spiced blackberries and herbal nuances. On the palate, it's dry with a restrained 12% ABV, delivering refined fruit concentration, supple tannins, and lively acidity. A pure and thoughtfully made wine that finishes with elegant savouriness and length.
Vintage Conditions – Low Yields, High Quality
The 2021 growing season in Sonoma Valley was characterised by a dry winter and cool spring, which delayed budburst until late March. The continued cool weather slowed shoot development and resulted in low yields and smaller berries. These conditions, however, contributed to greater flavour intensity and colour concentration. Harvest began on August 13th, benefitting from ideal late-season temperatures that allowed the fruit to mature evenly.

| Winery | The Mission vines are planted in the Scribe estate vineyard on the southwest-facing slope of Arrowhead Mountain in the Southern Mayacama volcanic mountain range. The Mission vines were planted in 2017 from plant material propagated from cuttings from vines planted in the late 1880s in Central California. Their lineage and presence at the Scribe Estate are an homage to the earliest days of California winegrowing history. The Mission grape was the first European grapevine cultivated in California but has been rarely planted post-prohibition. It thrived on the estate in the 1800s, and letters detailing the quality of the Mission wines from this property were recently discovered. In the spirit of curiosity and exploration, 0.8 hectares of Mission vines have been planted before the Hacienda to explore its potential in the new era. The vines are cultivated sustainably and hand-harvested in the night's calm. |
