Tasting Notes
The Saint Clair Pioneer Block 1 Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is an intense and vibrant wine, showcasing a complex bouquet of aromas. Expect expressive notes of white currant, passionfruit, and a subtle oyster shell minerality, all of which create an intriguing and aromatic nose. The palate is equally captivating, with lush tropical fruit flavours balanced by crisp green apple. The finish is pure, with a striking minerality that speaks to the quality of the vineyard’s terroir.

The 2022 growing season provided both challenges and rewards. While a wet and cold February posed risks to the harvest, a dry period between February 20th and March 20th allowed the grapes to ripen beautifully. The resulting wine is the perfect expression of Marlborough’s varied microclimates, with warm, sunny days and cool nights contributing to an ideal maturation environment for the Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

This vineyard site has been the foundation for some of Saint Clair finest wines. This is the vineyard where Saint Clair Family Estate first discovered the fruit to make their flagship Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley. The Block One site was previously part of the Wairau flood plain and is renowned for its deep, highly fertile, free-draining soils, which have been built up over time and help to produce the intensity of flavour in the resulting wine. The vineyard has a flat profile and is approximately three metres above sea level. It is now protected from flooding by a stopbank. Located in a slightly cooler site than most of the Marlborough Valley, the vines have a slower annual ripening period. The fruit is carefully monitored during the ripening stage and is harvested during the cooler evenings at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.
