Introduction
The Michele Chiarlo Rovereto Gavi del Comune di Gavi 2023 is a premier white wine crafted in the renowned Gavi sub-zone, celebrated for producing some of the finest examples of the Cortese grape. This wine stands out with its refined character, delivering a balance of vibrant fruit, floral notes, and mineral complexity, making it a perfect choice for discerning wine lovers and connoisseurs alike.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage is an expression of both the region’s terroir and the winemaker’s artistry. On the nose, this wine offers a bouquet of intense and elegant aromas, where the floral notes of white flowers intertwine with the crisp scent of golden apples and a touch of mineral freshness. The palate is well-structured, with a harmonious balance that speaks of its bright acidity and lingering freshness. The vibrant and fragrant notes lead to a finish that is remarkably long and refined, offering an unforgettable tasting experience.
The 2022 growing season was warm and dry, which accelerated the development of the vines, resulting in a harvest that began two weeks earlier than usual. The careful attention to the vines during this period preserved the integrity of the fruit, ensuring that the grapes maintained their freshness and aromatic qualities. The manual harvest on 21 August yielded perfectly healthy, ripe grapes, resulting in wines that are expressive, balanced, and a true reflection of their exceptional origins.
Winemaking Process
Stefano Chiarlo and Gianni Meleni, the winemakers behind this exceptional wine, pay meticulous attention to every step of the winemaking process. The grapes are hand-harvested, ensuring that only the best fruit makes it into the final wine. The wine undergoes careful fermentation and maturation, preserving the purity of the Cortese grape and its natural characteristics.

Winery | Rovereto is a small but privileged sub-zone of Gavi recognised as one of the best microclimates for producing the Cortese grape. The vines are grown in mostly calcareous clay-marl soils of volcanic origin, rich in iron and magnesium. The vines undergo a strict pruning programme and a green harvest to keep yields low and concentrate the flavours in the grapes. Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's most prestigious winemakers, producing outstanding wines from some of the most exceptional sites in Piedmont, including Barolo’s world-famous Cannubi and Cerequio vineyards. Founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo and now run by his sons Alberto and Stefano, the Chiarlo philosophy “is to capture the terroir” from their sustainably cultivated vineyards, which hold the VIVA certification. With a judicious use of oak, they handcraft a selection of wines suitable for ageing, some of which can be enjoyed earlier. Their stunning collection of Barolo and Barbera wines consistently receives 90+ points from Wine Advocate James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast. |
