Kooyong Single Block Faultline Chardonnay 2021 – Buy Premium Australian Chardonnay Online

A Highly Acclaimed Single-Block Chardonnay from the Mornington Peninsula

Discover the elegance and complexity of the Kooyong Single Block Faultline Chardonnay 2021, a limited-production wine sourced from a 0.5-hectare parcel of 26-year-old vines within the acclaimed Faultline block on the Mornington Peninsula. This vintage highlights the distinct terroir of the site, where less ironstone and deeper clay soils result in a rich, earthy expression and a fuller palate, setting it apart from the neighbouring Farrago block.

Traditional Winemaking with a Minimal Intervention Approach

Grapes were hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed directly into French oak barriques (20% new oak). Fermentation was spontaneous, guided by native yeasts, and the wine was matured on lees for 11 months without battonage. It was racked just once before bottling, with no fining and minimal filtration, preserving its natural character and structure.

Tasting Notes: Kooyong Faultline Chardonnay 2021

This Chardonnay opens with vibrant citrus aromatics—lemon peel, white nectarine, and grapefruit—intertwined with delicate white florals and flinty minerality. Underneath lies a subtle touch of spice, almond meal, and nougat lees complexity. The palate is refined and powerful, with grapefruit and lime leading the way. Creamy mascarpone, almond, and saline minerality add layers of texture. Finely etched acidity gives the wine a linear, mineral-driven finish that is both mouthwatering and long-lasting.

Kooyong was established in the late 1990s, but its modern incarnation can be traced to its
acquisition in 2004 by the Gjergja family; success duly followed, and its growing reputation
was cemented in 2012, when it was named as James Halliday’s ‘Winery of the Year’. Given the Given
Mornington Peninsula’s reputation for cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it should come
as no surprise that some inspiration is taken from Burgundy, but these wines are very much
examples of the regional style, with freshness, elegance and balance at the fore. The approach
both in the vineyards and the winery is minimalist, with the combination of low-input agriculture
and low-intervention winemaking producing wines of real character and purity.
