A Unique Expression of Alentejo’s Terroir
The Herdade do Rocim Rocim Amphora White Alentejo 2022 showcases the exceptional winemaking talent of Pedro Ribeiro and Catarina Vieira, offering a rare and captivating glimpse into Portugal's rich winemaking tradition. This naturally vinified white wine embodies the essence of Alentejo, one of the country's most celebrated wine regions.
Crafted with a blend of four indigenous Portuguese grape varieties—Antão Vaz (40%), Manteúdo (20%), Perrum (20%), and Rabo de Ovelha (20%)—this wine is fermented and aged using ancient techniques in amphorae, which impart a unique texture and depth to the wine. The grapes are carefully selected to create a balanced, nuanced wine that pays homage to the region’s rich history of winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine reveals a stunning golden hue that hints at its complexity. The nose is a beautiful combination of smoky, spicy, and herbal aromas, which envelop a core of fresh, citrusy fruit. On the palate, grapefruit flavours shine through, accompanied by subtle herbaceous notes of tomato plant, adding a distinct layer of complexity. The texture is firm and dry, with the amphora ageing lending a rounded, tactile mouthfeel. The finish is long, mineral-driven, and slightly saline, creating a refreshing and persistent aftertaste that lingers delightfully.
Food Pairing
This wine’s crisp acidity and mineral character make it an excellent match for grilled seafood, fresh salads, or even a delicate goat cheese. Its versatility allows it to pair beautifully with a range of Mediterranean dishes, complementing both light and more complex flavours.

Winery | Herdade do Rocim is associated with the Sustainable Program of the Alentejo Viticulture. This wine is made from organically grown grapes; 70% of the vineyard is certified, and the remaining 30% is in conversion. The estate is situated on the Vidigueira fault, a 30-mile-long east-west facing escarpment which rises to 420 metres. The fault significantly influences the climate, trapping the cool, humid Atlantic winds, so despite its southern location, it is one of the most temperate sub-regions in the Alentejo. These cooling and humid influences descend at night, creating diurnal temperature differences of 15°C, which extend the ripening period, with the warm days concentrating the flavours in the grapes while balancing the natural acidity retained during the cool nights. The soils are of granitic and schistous origin. The grapes for this wine come from ancient vineyards made up of ancient, native varieties. The fruit was manually harvested at optimal maturity. |
