Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve Constantia 2021 Wine Description

Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve Constantia 2021 is a premium red wine hailing from the renowned Western Cape, South Africa. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (48%), Merlot (24%), Cabernet Franc (21%), and Petit Verdot (7%), this wine embodies the distinctive character of the Constantia region. With an ABV of 14%, it strikes a balanced and full-bodied profile that perfectly marries ripe fruit flavours with the depth of oak.

Tasting Notes:
On the nose, this flagship red from Groot Constantia unveils a beautiful complexity. Rich aromas of blackcurrant, dark chocolate, and graphite are complemented by subtle hints of cinnamon and cedar wood, courtesy of the generous use of new oak during maturation. These aromas seamlessly flow into the palate, where layers of dark fruit and sweet spices envelop the senses. The wine has a firm, structured body with a lingering finish, showcasing excellent aging potential. With 3.6 g/L residual sugar, it maintains a perfect balance of sweetness and dryness, with smooth tannins and a refined texture.

Vineyard and Winemaking:
The 2021 vintage benefited from the cool and wet winter, which brought relief to the Western Cape after a prolonged dry period. A few warm days in winter led to uneven budbreak and flowering, which resulted in uneven ripening of the grapes. To address this, green harvesting took place in January, removing unripe bunches to ensure only the best fruit was harvested. The cool, dry conditions of February provided the perfect ripening environment, resulting in a wine of exceptional quality.

Winemaker:
Crafted under the expert guidance of Boela Gerber, this wine reflects the winemaker’s commitment to excellence and the region’s unique terroir.

The vineyards are located in a steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The climate is Mediterranean, with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes. The average rainfall is approximately 1,100mm per annum. The soils are predominantly Clovelly and Glenrosaa gravelly soils with low fertility. The climate, with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils, provides the ideal setting for making this top-quality wine.

Groot Constantia is South Africa's oldest estate and one of South Africa's most visited tourist attractions. In 1685, Cape Governor Simon van der Stel built a farm in the foothills of Table Mountain, which he named Constantia. Groot Constantia received world acclaim from Napoleon, Bismarck, and King Louis Philippe of France, the biggest single buyers of Groot Constantia wines. They had to sell to the Cape government after phylloxera ravaged the vineyards. Now, the total estate covers 165 hectares, of which 87 hectares are planted at an altitude of 60 to 280 meters above sea level. The vineyards are cultivated sustainably and hold the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) certification. The climate is generally cool, resulting in complex and balanced wines.
