A Legacy of Winemaking Excellence Since 1885

Founded in 1885, Far Niente Winery takes its name from the Italian phrase “Dolce Far Niente”, meaning “how sweet it is to do nothing”. After flourishing in its early years, the winery was abandoned during Prohibition and lay dormant for over 60 years. In 1979, Gil Nickel revitalised the estate, painstakingly restoring both the historic stone winery and its vineyards. Today, Far Niente owns 80 hectares of prime vineyard land across Napa Valley’s most prestigious appellations and is internationally acclaimed for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay — wines that consistently sell out worldwide.

The 2022 vintage of Far Niente Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted from meticulously selected grapes grown in renowned sub-regions, including Calistoga, Oak Knoll, St. Helena, Stags Leap, Diamond Mountain, and Yountville, alongside fruit from Far Niente’s own estate vineyards in Oakville. These diverse vineyard sites benefit from Napa Valley’s unique geology and mesoclimate. Gravelly loam soils in Oakville promote wines with bright fruit and fine tannins, while cooling morning fog from the nearby San Pablo Bay, combined with warm afternoons, creates a long growing season ideal for developing complex flavours and balanced acidity.

Artisan Winemaking & French Oak Ageing

Far Niente practices precision winemaking to highlight the character of each vineyard. Hand-harvested grapes underwent gentle fermentation with select yeasts, followed by 12 days of skin contact to extract deep colour, layered flavours, and supple tannins. The final blend — 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec, and 1% Cabernet Franc — was matured for 17 months in French oak barrels, 62% of which were new, adding refined texture and subtle spice.
