E Guigal Château d’Ampuis Côte-Rôtie 2020 – A Refined Expression of the Rhône Valley

Overview:
The E Guigal Château d’Ampuis Côte-Rôtie 2020 is a premier wine hailing from the heart of France's Rhône Valley. Crafted from a blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, this exceptional wine represents the epitome of craftsmanship, showcasing the region's rich terroir. With an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 14.5%, it boasts a depth of character that only comes from careful production methods, including 38 months of maturation in new oak barrels. This wine is ideal for connoisseurs who seek a structured, elegant red with a complexity that develops beautifully over time.

Winemaking and Vineyard Excellence:
Produced from seven of the most exceptional plots on the domain, Château d’Ampuis is renowned for its elegance and power. The distinctive blend of Syrah and Viognier imbues the wine with a remarkable balance of rich, dark fruit flavours and floral notes, while the extended oak ageing adds layers of complexity. The wine’s aroma is immediately inviting, offering toasty, smoky notes alongside ripe black fruits, such as blackberries and cassis, with hints of exotic spice and a touch of violets from the Viognier. The mouthfeel is both refined and structured, with velvety tannins that lead into a long, lingering finish.

Tasting Notes:
On the nose, the E Guigal Château d’Ampuis Côte-Rôtie 2020 exudes the complexity that defines its lineage. Aromas of black fruits—particularly blackberries and dark plums—are beautifully interwoven with toasty oak nuances, revealing the wine's careful ageing process. Subtle floral elements, including violets and lavender, add an additional layer of intrigue. On the palate, the wine presents a full-bodied profile with structured tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, harmonious finish that reflects the wine's pedigree.

Awards:

  • Decanter World Wine Awards: Gold Medal

  • Wine Spectator: 93 Points

  • Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: 95 Points

  • Jancis Robinson: 18/20 Points

Perfect Pairings:
This elegant wine pairs perfectly with hearty dishes like roasted lamb, grilled steaks, and rich, flavorful cheeses such as aged Gouda or Roquefort. It can also be enjoyed on its own, making it a versatile choice for any occasion.
