Wine Description:
The Domaine Armand Rousseau Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques 2008 is a remarkable example of Burgundy’s celebrated terroir, offering a beautifully detailed and evolving experience for any discerning wine lover. As the wine opens, its colour begins to show signs of maturity, with a subtle lightening at the rim, indicating its graceful evolution.
On the nose, the wine presents a complex bouquet of spicy, dried red berry aromas, subtly complemented by earthy notes and a delicate touch of "sauvage," which adds to its intriguing character. The secondary influences in the wine suggest a maturity that enhances its depth and complexity, making it an excellent expression of Gevrey Chambertin.
The palate is dominated by a striking minerality and an intense mid-palate that is beautifully balanced by the wine’s crisp acidity. The flavours are detailed, showcasing the finesse of this Premier Cru vineyard, with a linear structure that builds to a focused, sneaky long finish. While this wine displays a certain austerity, it is also full of character and depth, underpinned by a vibrant acidity that is likely to evolve further with time.
Though it is enjoyable now, there is still room for this wine to develop, but given its current composition, long-term aging may lead to a more angular profile. Therefore, while it has the potential to evolve, it may not benefit from extended cellaring. The 2008 vintage is a wine defined by its freshness and elegance, making it a highly regarded choice among Burgundy enthusiasts.

Winery | The colour is just beginning to lighten at the rim. There is ample secondary influence to the spicy dried red berry scents that reflect additional soft earth notes and a whiff of the Sauvage. There is both excellent intensity and minerality to the beautifully well-detailed middle-weight flavours that culminate in a linear, focused and sneaky long finish that is the duty and still a bit austere. This is unlikely ever to be a seductive wine as it's shaped and defined by its acidity, but I like the depth on offer. I would further note that while this could certainly be enjoyed now, there is a bit of upside potential remaining. However, I wouldn't advise ageing this for the very long term as it risks becoming edgy in time. 92 points Allen Meadows, Burghound (3/2019) |
