Chateau Leoville Barton La Reserve de Leoville Barton Saint Julien 2019

Introduction:
The 2019 Chateau Leoville Barton La Reserve de Leoville Barton is an exceptional second wine from one of Bordeaux's most renowned estates. Made from a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc, this Saint-Julien wine epitomises elegance and refinement, offering a perfect balance of fruit, spice, and structure. A great choice for collectors and connoisseurs, this Bordeaux is ready to impress with its impressive depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes:
On the nose, the 2019 La Reserve de Leoville Barton reveals a rich bouquet of forest berries, complemented by subtle notes of cedar, coffee, and vanilla spice. Its well-structured palate is refined, delivering a smooth and harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and fine tannins. The wine has a long, satisfying finish, making it a perfect companion for a variety of rich dishes, including red meats and aged cheeses.

Winemaking Process:
The wine undergoes traditional Bordeaux winemaking methods, with fermentation lasting approximately five days, during which the must is pumped twice daily. The wine was left on the skins for around two weeks to extract colour, flavour, and tannins before being pressed to produce the pressed wine, an essential part of the final blend. The malolactic fermentation takes place in vats, rounding out the wine’s palate before being aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

"The history of Chateau Leoville Barton began in 1722 when Irishman Thomas Barton moved from Ireland to the Bordeaux region, where he established a successful trading company. His grandson bought Chateau Langoa and part of the Leoville estate in 1826. The current owner, Anthony Barton, lives in the beautiful 18th-century Chateau Langoa and makes two wines, Chateau Leoville Barton and Chateau Langoa-Barton. He now owns 51 hectares of vineyard at Chateau Leoville-Barton which lies close to the Gironde, sandwiched between the water and Chateau Talbot. They have a typical St. Julien terroir of gravelly soils over deep clay. Plantings are 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the remainder being 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, reflecting the classic, Cabernet-dominated wine produced in the region. "

The vines are trained using the Double Guyot method with high-density planting. The average age of the vines is 45 years, producing an average yield of 42 hectolitres per hectare. The soil is gravel of varying depths on top of a clay subsoil. Traditional ploughing and pruning occur; weed killers are not used, and fertilisers are used only in limited quantities.
