Wine Overview

The Bodegas Vinatigo Marmajuelo Islas Canarias Tenerife 2022 is a striking white wine, showcasing the distinct characteristics of the Tenerife terroir. Made from 100% Marmajuelo grapes, this vintage from the Canary Islands offers a highly aromatic experience that transports you to the island’s lush, sun-drenched vineyards. The wine exhibits pure, captivating notes of passion fruit and fig tree leaves on the nose, followed by a bright and opulent palate of ripe fruit. The finish is crisp, clean, and persistent, creating a refreshing sense of elegance.

The 2022 vintage was notably impacted by the unique climatic conditions of the year. Characterised as a cloudy vintage, this brought a shift in the wine’s profile. With global warming being an ongoing concern in the region, these cloudy conditions allowed for a slow, controlled ripening process. This resulted in wines that retain more natural acidity, showcasing freshness and tension, particularly in the white grape vineyards situated near the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean breezes, paired with the warmer temperatures closer to the coast and the elevation of medium-high altitude vineyards, have imparted a delicate, salty minerality that defines the wine’s personality. This vintage is a beautiful representation of Tenerife's diversity and unique growing conditions.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Intense and aromatic, with vibrant notes of passion fruit, fig tree leaves, and hints of tropical fruit.

  • Palate: Rich and opulent with ripe fruit, balanced by fresh acidity and a crisp, lingering finish.

  • Finish: Persistent, clean, and fresh with a subtle salty minerality that speaks to the ocean breezes.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 vintage was a cloudy one for the Tenerife region, providing cooler temperatures that enabled the retention of more natural acidity in the grapes. This slow ripening process led to a well-balanced wine with a fresh and lively character. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean combined with the warmer temperatures near the coast has contributed to a distinctive salty edge, adding to the wine's complexity and freshness.

Juan Jesus found a few Marmajuelo vines on the island of El Hierro and brought some vine shoots back to Tenerife. After micro-vinification, he was amazed at the result. The Marmajuelo vines grow close to the ocean below 250 metres where the temperatures are consistently between 21 to 23°C all year round and the influence of the sea breeze is constant. The absence of phylloxera in the Canary Islands has preserved many unique varieties, creating an unparalleled viticultural heritage. As a result, the vines are ungrafted, allowing for complete interaction between the plant and soil. The combination of the volcanic soils, the cooling Alisios trade winds, and the island's distinctive microclimates contribute to the wines' extraordinary personalities. The vineyard is managed sustainably without the use of herbicides or synthetic products. Due to the orography of the land, the vineyards are manually cultivated.
