Barros Colheita Port Douro 1978 Magnum
Barros Colheita Port Douro 1978 Magnum: A Vintage Classic
The Barros Colheita Port Douro 1978 Magnum is an exquisite expression of Portugal’s renowned Douro Valley. This exceptional wine is crafted with a harmonious blend of four indigenous grape varieties: Tinta Franca (25%), Tinta Barroca (25%), Tinta Roriz (25%), and Touriga Nacional (25%). Each of these varietals contributes to the wine's deep character, offering a rich, multi-layered experience. With an ABV of 20% and a residual sugar content of 120.1g/l, this Port strikes a perfect balance between sweetness and complexity, making it an ideal choice for connoisseurs and collectors alike.
Wine Profile
The Barros Colheita Port Douro 1978 Magnum presents an intense amber colour, a testament to its long maturation process in oak casks. The nose is both complex and inviting, with layers of dried fruit—including rich, dark raisins and figs—alongside spicy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, the wine is wonderfully smooth, with a velvety texture and a lingering finish that showcases the depth of its age.
Awards and Recognition
This vintage Port has garnered numerous accolades, including a notable 91 points from Wine Enthusiast (2016), and a Silver Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards (2016). These recognitions underscore the wine’s exceptional quality and its standing among the finest Ports produced in recent decades.
Winemaking and Production
Crafted by renowned winemaker Carlos Alves, this Colheita Port has benefited from meticulous attention to detail throughout its production process. Aged in natural cork-sealed bottles, the wine continues to evolve, allowing the flavours to mature beautifully. It is important to note that the wine is neither vegetarian nor vegan, and it is not made from organic or biodynamic practices.

Winery | Traditionally, the vines in the region are grown low, close to the ground. The single or double Guyot and unilateral and bilateral cordons are the methods most frequently used for training the vines. Trellises are not permitted for Port Wine grapes. Having celebrated its 100th year of trading in 2013, Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port. Much of their success comes from Colheita Ports - old Tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheita Ports has established them as the stand-out producer of this style. Barros leaves their Colheita Ports to mature in a cask until being hand bottled to order. The loss of wine from evaporation (known as the 'Angel's Share') is much higher than bottle ageing. A sacrifice they are willing to make helps them achieve unsurpassed quality in their Colheita wines. In June 2006, Barros was integrated into the Sogevinus Group, which is growing the brand in international markets. |
