Tasting Notes
The 2021 Senses Wines El Diablo Russian River Chardonnay is a remarkable and expressive wine that captures the essence of the Russian River Valley terroir. This wine opens with vibrant aromas of flamboyant pineapple, orange blossom, and subtle hints of coriander seed, marzipan, and lemongrass. On the palate, it delivers beautiful tension between its tropical fruit richness and crisp acidity, resulting in a harmonious and refreshing experience. The finish is long, showcasing exceptional purity and a clean, mineral-driven character.
Vineyard and Harvest Conditions
The 2021 vintage benefited from unique climatic conditions, including a dry winter with below-average rainfall, followed by a cool spring that delayed vine dormancy until late March. The spring weather was consistently dry and cool, slowing shoot growth, which led to smaller berry sizes and reduced yields. These factors combined to concentrate the flavours, resulting in a wine that is both vibrant and complex. The harvest was completed in ideal, temperate weather conditions, contributing to the overall quality and finesse of the wine.
Wine Making Process
Under the expert guidance of renowned winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, the Chardonnay grapes underwent meticulous vineyard management and careful winemaking techniques to preserve the natural purity and expression of the fruit. The wine was crafted with minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the Russian River Valley to shine through in every sip.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This dry, full-bodied Chardonnay pairs beautifully with dishes such as grilled seafood, roasted chicken, creamy pasta dishes, or a selection of hard cheeses like Gruyère and Comté. Its vibrant acidity and rich texture make it versatile for both casual dining and more formal occasions.

Winery | The grapes come from the El Diablo vineyard, which sits on a ridge above Eastside Road in the Russian River Valley AVA. It was planted in 2008 by then-vineyard manager Ulises Valdez. Valdez told the Senses Wines team that fruit always tastes better when you work hard, and that sentiment holds true for the El Diablo vineyard. The vineyard comprises Old Wente Selection Chardonnay clones and is planted in 4'x6' spacing. The soils are gravelly and sandy loam, which offers excellent drainage properties, and a tight clay subsoil retains water to sustain the vines. The warm climate is tempered by the cool coastal breezes and the trademark fog that lingers over the vineyards, bringing moisture and cooling the vines. The result is a long hang-time, during which the vines slowly build aromatic complexity and concentrated flavours superbly balanced by natural, crisp freshness. The vineyard is certified as Sustainably Farmed Grapes, and the grapes are manually harvested. |
