Tasting Notes and Flavour Profile
On the nose, the Ronsel do Sil Vel Uveyra Ribeira Sacra Mencia 2018 is immediately expressive, offering layers of wild berry fruits, earthy flinty notes, and a subtle hint of violet. The palate is beautifully balanced, with a velvety texture that is both refined and approachable. As the wine evolves, a touch of balsamic emerges on the finish, adding a pleasing complexity that lingers. This wine showcases an excellent interplay between fruit, minerality, and subtle floral nuances, making each sip a delightful experience.
2018 Vintage Overview
The 2018 vintage was marked by climatic balance, which played a crucial role in the development of the grapes. After a drought in 2017, the vineyards in Ribeira Sacra benefited from abundant rainfall during the winter and spring, allowing the vines to recover. A March snowfall led to a late flowering period, while the spring transition from cold to hot temperatures was abrupt. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the 2018 vintage allowed for a slow and thorough ripening of the grapes, resulting in fresh wines with a lower ABV (12%) than previous years.

Winery | The vineyard covers 10 hectares, including espalier trained vines of 10 to 30 years and older vines of 35 to 100 years old- some pre-phylloxera. The vineyard is cultivated sustainably following organic and biodynamic principles: manual weeding, using dried gorse as a cover crop, and mulching take place to preserve the soil's natural humidity and nutrients. Pesticides and herbicides are not used. Irrigation is prohibited, so the vines are nourished by rainwater, underground sources, and soil minerals, leading to exceptionally long roots up to 10 metres long and producing concentrated and complex wines. 19 Indigenous varietals are approved in the D.O. Ribera Sacra, which grows side by side in the vineyard. Thus, the harvesting team must have great knowledge and experience to recognise each, as they are harvested separately according to the D.O. regulations. |
