Analytical data
The yield is limited by very close pruning and targeted thinning and can vary from five to 5-7 tons per hectare according to the season.
The grapes are picked by hand collected, and transported in boxes. Harvesting starts at the beginning of September with the Merlot, continues at the end of the month with the Cabernet Sauvignon, and finishes with the Montepulciano, a fairly late variety, in October, when the grapes have reached peak condition with an advanced degree of phenolic ripening.
The grapes are destalked and lightly crushed, then fermented at 27-29°C in steel fermentation tanks, with the cap submerged, for 14-15 days on natural yeasts.
Once the malolactic fermentation has taken place, the wine is transferred to 225-litre oak barrels for 14 months of ageing. After bottling, Pelago is left to age further in a temperature-controlled environment for about 12 months.

Winery | The Umani Ronchi story began in 1957 when Gino Umani Ronchi established a small farm in the heart of the Verdicchio Classico region. Just a few years later, the Bianchi-Bernetti family purchased the farm, and although they retained the original name, they certainly put their indelible stamp on it. An early focus on export coupled with a keen eye for expansion opportunities helped them establish Umani Ronchi as the global brand it is today. With 210 hectares under vine in Castelli di Jesi, Conero, and Abruzzo and a dedicated winemaking facility in each region, they have achieved scale whilst retaining an unwavering focus on typicity and quality. The result is a range of wines highlighting both the versatility and the quality potential of the Marche’s and Abruzzo’s native grape varieties. |
