Rare Grand Cru Burgundy with Exceptional Cellaring Potential – 96 Points Burghound
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 1996 – A Grand Cru of Legendary Purity and Power
The 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru Monopole is a truly iconic expression from one of Burgundy's most revered vineyards. This rare Grand Cru Pinot Noir offers an astonishingly pure and expressive bouquet, marked by classic spice box, hoisin sauce, and soy aromas. The palate is bold and structured, revealing deep flavours of earth, aged leather, black tea, and subtle underbrush, all seamlessly integrated with ripe, powerful tannins and exceptional sap concentration.
Unlike many ‘96s, this vintage of La Tâche remains remarkably primary, showing minimal evolution in bottle, which is a testament to its extraordinary structure and ageing capacity. While softer than the 1996 Grands Échézeaux on the palate, this bottling delivers phenomenal length and balance that will continue to improve for another decade and age gracefully for 50 years or more.
Score: 96 Points – Allen Meadows, Burghound (2012, re-tasted 2016+)

Winery | It is a genuinely great vintage for La Tache that is softer in the mouth than the '96 Grands Ech, and this should improve for another decade and last 50 years. It's very classy juice. Note: while it's happened only twice in my experience, the '96 can be intensely vegetal on the nose and not exhibit the purity that the wine is justifiably famous for; however, I have tasted so many outstanding bottles of the '96 LT that I view these two examples as outliers. 96 points Allen Meadows, Burghound, Jan 2012, 2016+ |
