Product Overview
Creation Wines’ Viognier 2024 is a bright and expressive white wine that embodies the vivacious character of the varietal. From the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in South Africa’s Walker Bay, this Viognier offers a delightful balance of succulent peach and ripe pear. It is crafted with an emphasis on freshness, zest, and classic style. With its refreshing profile, it delivers a captivating experience for any wine lover.

Producer's Note
Founded in 2002 by Swiss-born Jean-Claude Martin and his South African wife, Carolyn, Creation Wines was born from their shared vision to produce wines that express the unique beauty of nature. Nestled in the stunning Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, this biodiverse region is part of the Walker Bay wine district. The estate's location on the foothills of Babylonstoren Mountain is marked by ancient quartzite and clay-rich soils, cooled by ocean breezes from the nearby Atlantic. As WWF Champions and Carbon Heroes, Creation Wines is committed to sustainability and preserving the environment for future generations.

Creation’s wines are a true reflection of the land, crafted to capture the essence of their terroir. This commitment to quality and environmental stewardship has garnered worldwide acclaim, and Creation was recently ranked No. 1 in Africa and No. 4 globally at the 2023 World’s Best Vineyards Awards.

Vineyard and Farming Practices
The Viognier vines are planted at an altitude of 270 meters above sea level on clay loam soils derived from 450-million-year-old Bokkeveld shale. The vineyard's exposure to cooling south-easterly breezes from the Benguela current, combined with the protective clouds trapped by the surrounding mountains, provides a unique microclimate for the grapes. The 7-wire Perold trellis system ensures optimal vine growth, while organic practices such as cover crops for weed control and better water retention enrich the soil. With an emphasis on sustainable farming, Creation uses organic fertilisers and mechanical weed control, avoiding herbicides. The grapes are hand-harvested early in the morning to preserve freshness.

Winemaking Process
The Viognier grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts, which helps preserve the purity of the fruit and showcases the cool-climate terroir. After fermentation, the wine is aged for six months in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees, enhancing its texture and complexity.

Tasting Notes

The Viognier blocks are planted at 270m above sea level. The soils consist of clay loam derived from ancient 450-million-year-old decomposed Bokkeveld shale. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean's Benguela current brings cooling south-easterly breezes to the
area, as do clouds hemmed in by the surrounding mountains, trapping cool air and moisture in the narrow Hemel-en-Aarde. The 7-wire Perold trellis system is used to train the vines as it is the most suited to the terroir. The farming methods aim to work hand-in-hand with nature to ensure healthy soils. Organic fertilisers are used, and cover crops are planted for weed control, putting back minerals and for better water retention in soil, as there is less influence from the sun. Mechanical weed control is used instead of herbicides, and the grapes are manually harvested during the cool of the morning.
