Tasting Notes – Complex, Earthy and Elegant
The 2020 vintage opens with a stylish, lifted nose of blackberry, cassis and aniseed, underscored by notes of marzipan, sarsaparilla and subtle bergamot. On the palate, fleshy dark fruits merge seamlessly with earthy undertones and a bay leaf herbal lift. Fresh acidity and fine dusty tannins add tension and grace, ensuring the wine retains finesse while offering excellent ageing potential.

Vineyard and Winemaking – A Heritage of Innovation
Planted in 1969 on unirrigated grey silty-loam soils with gravel bands, the estate-grown fruit is hand-harvested in the early morning into 10kg boxes for optimal freshness. The winemaking combines tradition and innovation:
-
Cabernet Sauvignon is destemmed for structure
-
Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot are left as whole bunches for complexity
-
Open fermenters and wild yeast fermentation are used
-
Aged 15 months in 40% new French oak
-
Bottled by gravity without filtration
This meticulous process results in a wine of extraordinary clarity, refinement and age-worthiness.

| Winery | Although wine was an important industry in the Yarra Valley throughout the 1800s, by the 1920s it had largely halted as farmers favoured the greater returns available from sheep farming. It took the vision of a now legendary plant physiologist and Roseworthy winemaking graduate, Dr Bailey Carrodus, to help re-establish the Yarra Valley as one of Australia’s pre-eminent wine regions. After several years of careful research, in 1969 he purchased land at the foot of the Warramate Hills, and in 1973 produced the first vintages of his now iconic Dry Red Wine No.1 and Dry Red Wine No.2. Dr Carrodus continued to make the wines until his death in 2008, when the winery was purchased by businessmen Ed Peter and Reid Bosward. Both long term fans of Yarra Yering, they continue to honour the founder’s quest for elegance and sophistication, ably supported by winemaker Sarah Crowe, who in 2017 was named Winemaker of the Year by James Halliday. |
