Stags Leap Wine Cellars Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2010

Winiarski noticed that one of the casks contained a standout wine, so he released it as a premium reserve line. He named it Cask 23, after the 1,000-gallon aging vessel from which it was pulled. To this day, the winery continues to release Cask 23 from the best grapes in significant vintages. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 20 months in French oak, mostly new oak. Mature examples will simply never come along again.

Stag's Leap is the name of both the winery and the sub-district of Napa Valley. This estate and it's then winemaker Warren Winiarski won worldwide renown when their 1973 won the famous 1976 wine tasting at which California Cabernets were pitted against the five Bordeaux 'first growths'. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars has maintained exemplary consistency since then. The Stag's Leap district is a hillside region just south of Oakville, east of the town of Yountville, and home to some of Napa's finest reds. 'Cask 23' is their flagship wine, a blend of the best grapes from SLV and Fay vineyards. While the 1974 vintage was aging, Winiarski noticed that one of the casks contained a standout wine, so he released it as a premium reserve line.

In a vintage such as 2010 where individual terroirs are so clearly marked, the Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cask 23 – a blend of the SLV and Fay – is at a distinct disadvantage because it naturally lacks the character and personality of those two wines. I must also note that the SLV and Fay have improved dramatically on their own terms, so the rationale of blending them is further diminished. To be sure the Cask 23 is an excellent representation of the vintage. There is plenty of 2010 fruit, structure and tannin, along with attractive hints of smoke, tar and incense, but at the end of the day, I find the Cask 23 less satisfying than Stags’ Leap Wine Cellars’ very best wines. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030. These 2010 Cabernet Sauvignons from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars are just as exciting from bottle as they were from barrel last year. The improvement in quality that has taken place here over the last few years is simply remarkable. I also tasted several samples of the 2011s, but as was the case at many addresses, the wines were too raw and unfinished to properly evaluate. Unfortunately, there will be no 2011 Cask 23.
