San Giovanni Della Sala is a wine with a pale straw yellow colour complemented by greenish highlights that catch the eye. A refined medley of floral aromas and distinct notes of ripe fruit, such as succulent peaches and tropical pineapple characterizes its bouquet. On the palate, this wine delivers a balanced and mouth-filling experience, offering persistent flavours and a delightful sense of bright freshness that lingers.
The Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries and exporting it for four; that’s twenty-six generations of uninterrupted family ownership. The first recorded mention of the family dates back to 1188, when they worked in the silk trade. They moved to Florence in the early thirteenth century and remain central figures in the city's fabric; Piazza Antinori is the square in the historical centre where their offices are located. Winemaking was added to the family’s activities in 1385, and during the sixteenth century, the wines spread, along with Antinori’s reputation, to France, Flanders, Spain, and North Africa. The purchase of the Tignanello estate in 1900 marked the beginning of a remarkable period of expansion, which shows no signs of abating. Through the judicious acquisition of vineyards and an uncanny knack for developing iconic wines, Antinori has become Tuscany’s – arguably Italy’s – pre-eminent wine producer, with an important presence in Piedmont, Lombardy, Umbria, and Puglia. Marchese Piero Antinori sums up the company’s outlook thus: “Ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation.”

Winery | Niccolò Antinori bought the fourteenth-century Castello della Sala in 1940 to provide a source of white wines to match the excellence of his Tuscan reds. With the introduction of Cervaro della Sala in 1987, his dream was fully realized: this is one of Italy’s defining whites, as influential and sought-after as Tignanello. Bramìto is effectively a mini-Cervaro, further proof of Umbria’s affinity with Chardonnay; Conte della Vipera is a full, herbal, Bordeaux-inspired blend of Sauvignon and Semillon. The castle's inhabitants initially ruled over the whole province of Orvieto, so the range would not be complete without a flagship example of that DOC; the ‘Superiore’ designates much lower permitted yields and hence considerable concentration. |
